<br />
So I am currently doing a Devlopment role, and during my day to day coding away I was asked to work with Regular Expressions.Now if you haven't heard of Regular Expressions (Commonly referred to as 'RegEx's') then let me fill you in:<br />
<br />
RegEx's are used for pattern matching when searching text and/or strings in an application. They are very useful in various roles where you need to find certain words or group of words but don't want to manually code every possible combination.<br />
<br />
<b>For example</b>: <br />
<a name='more'></a>Let's say that you have a website and you want to create a user 'blacklist', disallowing people from registering with any combination using the word 'admin'. Instead of coding each possible combination and then adding to them in a reactive manner, you could simply drop in a bit of code when a user registers, making sure it doesn't have a pattern that matches your Regular Expression.<br />
This may look confusing in you've not worked with them before but the exact RegEx may look like this:<br />
<blockquote><b>[\w'-]*[aA]dmin[\w'-]*</b></blockquote><br />
Now some of you may be looking at this and scratching your head, but it basically uses 'Expressions' in-lieu of characters, introducing 'fuzzy matching' to save us time. Using this RegEx, whenever a user enters a word such as<b> </b><i>Useradmin</i> , or <i>UserAdmin</i> (detecting capitalisation) our bit of code will detect it and not allow the request.<br />
<br />
Now you may ask, "What use is a bunch of character's to me, if I have no real clue what they represent?". Well this is where a tool like 'RegExr' comes in!<br />
<br />
RegExr is an online tool which allows you to debug/test your regular expressions along with providing samples and explanations of what each character represents.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsSPYuByqr94VD2gjofPh3LfE7oMFMc1TALCf3hOlFfdDGpT5XVbID2LQhvsLShZMY9AztVDxdnG8Qpf0G7xJfKoYKH4iF6yhbNt_3ITPU-QyFjhAGwP08NvXXnVyZy-ZQIJeguVNyyb8/s1600/RegExr.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="296" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsSPYuByqr94VD2gjofPh3LfE7oMFMc1TALCf3hOlFfdDGpT5XVbID2LQhvsLShZMY9AztVDxdnG8Qpf0G7xJfKoYKH4iF6yhbNt_3ITPU-QyFjhAGwP08NvXXnVyZy-ZQIJeguVNyyb8/s640/RegExr.png" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Click to Enlarge</td></tr>
</tbody></table><br />
<br />
The tool gives you a text field to dump a string/bunch of text into, and you can check which words your RegEx will anchor onto!<br />
<br />
This method is a lot quicker than compiling a bunch of code, and is quite useful for the 'Begginer' or 'Rusty Expert' alike!<br />
<br />
There is also a desktop version of the app available, which runs in Adobe Air to save on having to run it out of the browser.<br />
<br />

<br />
Just thought I would quickly share a new app that I grabbed on my iPhone which I have found useful, it's called <a href="http://hashable.com/beta">'Hashable'</a> and it is used for quickly sharing your digital business card with clients/colleagues from your phone.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div>For example, lets say you are out for dinner and drinks with a group of friends, and one mentions that they are looking for someone to come into their business and streamline their business processes (or some other area you kick ass in). To give them your full business contact details you simply<br />
<a name='more'></a>type in the recepients e-mail address or twitter ID, and they will instantly be sent your information (customisable through the app). Or alternatively if they have the app you can find them quickly through it, and save their information into your address book.<br />
<br />
It may be a bit of reinventing the wheel, but the app also has a social side to it, and focuses heavily on networking amongst your peers. A sort of linkedin packaged in a nice format, showing who your 'inner circle' of peers are meeting with, and where.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCHoUq60MhXKzelmVs-uxNPMJrGiSOg_P-k88K9DInH8TkO-ykk2ynssnTUEGpX20WX18CXQTb3C9q-iSE9RaFNriWc2T0zlQZEIdVKx6VDgxfU0kIeQ-U0ZUL30BH_gPg3L2cwmk4CGY/s1600/Hashable-logo.png" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCHoUq60MhXKzelmVs-uxNPMJrGiSOg_P-k88K9DInH8TkO-ykk2ynssnTUEGpX20WX18CXQTb3C9q-iSE9RaFNriWc2T0zlQZEIdVKx6VDgxfU0kIeQ-U0ZUL30BH_gPg3L2cwmk4CGY/s200/Hashable-logo.png" width="200" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Hashable - Track Business Relationships</td></tr>
</tbody></table><br />
<br />
Upon firing up the app for the first time, you are asked to build you 'inner circle'. Here you choose your colleagues/business friends and expand your entourage.<br />
<br />
The whole idea is to bring the foursquare/linkedin market together into a slimline fancy app for the business world, and in my opinion it does it well!<br />

<br />
So a colleague at work asked me for help to access another colleague's e-mail as the colleague is going on holiday and for business purposes access was required to both historical and new e-mails (so auto-forwarding wouldn't work).<br />
<br />
I looked into it, and figured out how to delegate mail access (along with Calendar access amongst other things). I thought it best to put together a guide on how to do it, as current instructions are a bit shaky from the research I did.<br />
<br />
As with previous articles, this was written to help internal IBM'ers but is applicable to other Domino/Lotus Notes Mail setups.<br />
<br />
Without further ado, the tutorial:<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<h3>How To Delegate Mail Access In Lotus Notes </h3><br />
<b>Requirements: </b>Lotus Notes with Domino Mail Server Setup (this guide isn't applicable to standalone POP3 clients), Access to Delegated Account, Access to Delegatee Account.<br />
<br />
<b>Time Required: </b>Around ~5mins<br />
<u><b></b></u><br />
<u><b>Part 1 - Delegating Access</b></u><br />
<u><b> </b></u><br />
Right, to start with we need to go on the 'Delegating Account' and give access to the 'Delegatee'.<br />
<br />
Fire up your Lotus Notes (If it isn't already!) and go to your Mail account.<br />
From here we want to go into the 'Mail Preferences' menu, located:<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyNxBKR7rQTZab4VAsMRm7CA_ZkoQEjUlDPd4o3pSKZWS_XjWGxRDhngrbpGNvYdyq0m3jYtCgPGFn9Bd4ZUhIytdaSWcgzm7FDP1H13P0XehpBdzN87qG8PaLMy-d6du8hjmOlRoC7Z4/s1600/1.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="215" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyNxBKR7rQTZab4VAsMRm7CA_ZkoQEjUlDPd4o3pSKZWS_XjWGxRDhngrbpGNvYdyq0m3jYtCgPGFn9Bd4ZUhIytdaSWcgzm7FDP1H13P0XehpBdzN87qG8PaLMy-d6du8hjmOlRoC7Z4/s640/1.PNG" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Click on 'Preferences' (Click to Enlarge)</td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br />
</td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br />
</td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br />
</td></tr>
</tbody></table><br />
This will present you with a popup with multiple tabs. On this popup click on the tab titled "<b>Access & Delegation</b>". You should see the screen below, and from here we want to click on the button titled "<b>Add</b>":<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiX_uh_Twd_LPjQS4dMY-Sm0G7jV2BL29sV9APRUdOr1UAIA5qBb6FGN8dFb6Zd1qM_P6eqXjwrIqKPq24OZ3gYJ-RzuWJPMbWNGZrrMBkNSrOnkhZK-dMnYwo0AumJCCPJtWqZG90NWY8/s1600/2.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="372" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiX_uh_Twd_LPjQS4dMY-Sm0G7jV2BL29sV9APRUdOr1UAIA5qBb6FGN8dFb6Zd1qM_P6eqXjwrIqKPq24OZ3gYJ-RzuWJPMbWNGZrrMBkNSrOnkhZK-dMnYwo0AumJCCPJtWqZG90NWY8/s400/2.PNG" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Click on "Add..." (Click to Enlarge)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>This will bring up yet another pop-up (how fun!), which is shown below. For the purpose of this tutorial we want to delegate access to one person, but you can share with a whole group or even everyone within your Company (Unwise!). To add someone, click on the small grey arrow inside the text box for "<b>Just this person or group</b>":<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiLHd0XGSpwolOv9H2DZH_AEpeSM6ekzNcyUPgOryeFTI1_tP92jYACihPL8fKXDGQzhLoqkAProCvORX0mmR1QFAzeHblRpFslApJT8UrItCaf14ebkd4NKdlGPgLPG44-q4qx6K7c4I/s1600/3.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="307" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiLHd0XGSpwolOv9H2DZH_AEpeSM6ekzNcyUPgOryeFTI1_tP92jYACihPL8fKXDGQzhLoqkAProCvORX0mmR1QFAzeHblRpFslApJT8UrItCaf14ebkd4NKdlGPgLPG44-q4qx6K7c4I/s400/3.PNG" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Click the grey downwards facing arrow (Click to Enlarge)</td></tr>
</tbody></table><br />
This will popup an address book with a drop-down allowing you to find the person(s) you want to allow access. In this example I have used my colleagues name from our LDAP server, but you can use names from your personal address book (just click on the 'Directory' list box), as long as they are hosted within your company's e-mail infrastructure. Popup:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGH4ulIgKy_J-_e7UHAWDdkZ6A6BjcO_57OU9IVGM7Sz5Gt1uWRBi9Pf6Fik8bF4WSr8_sDyGSPM83d-g3UneB8FVttrrER0Smodly7435KxsAqsheKtRTnwexrrgr7gNGzYpv6aBfkJ0/s1600/4.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGH4ulIgKy_J-_e7UHAWDdkZ6A6BjcO_57OU9IVGM7Sz5Gt1uWRBi9Pf6Fik8bF4WSr8_sDyGSPM83d-g3UneB8FVttrrER0Smodly7435KxsAqsheKtRTnwexrrgr7gNGzYpv6aBfkJ0/s1600/4.PNG" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Find the 'Delegatee'</td></tr>
</tbody></table>So from here we want to choose our 'Delegatee' and click '<b>OK</b>' to return to the previous popup. This previous popup should now have your 'Delegatee's' name populated in the previously empty field.<br />
<br />
We now have to choose the level of access we want to give them, and with what components they should have access (As well as how your calendar invites should be handled). This tutorial will show how to give 'Read Only Access' to all components, but feel free to change here to your suiting. Choose the level of access you want to delegate and click '<b>OK</b>':<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXNauYQLSfkDZVmSjXX3CNZcojBUGVFmc0L0k_xB4GBmSl2epZqxyG-i3Ydhnr9EE-HHiVhTCSIAi5OW8gmNGTPH62jLFMjZymnHvBhv7KGBZ-BmvCBhF67yT3k_dXCqh_hSCSSBv_qVU/s1600/5.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="308" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXNauYQLSfkDZVmSjXX3CNZcojBUGVFmc0L0k_xB4GBmSl2epZqxyG-i3Ydhnr9EE-HHiVhTCSIAi5OW8gmNGTPH62jLFMjZymnHvBhv7KGBZ-BmvCBhF67yT3k_dXCqh_hSCSSBv_qVU/s400/5.PNG" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Choose level of Access, and with what Components (Click to Enlarge)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>Right, after clicking '<b>OK</b>' on that box, do the same to the prior popup, and you should now be back on the usual mail view (I hope!).<br />
<br />
We now need to restart Lotus Notes to update the permissions to the server.<br />
<br />
<u><b>Part 2 - Gaining Access To Delegated Account</b></u><br />
<br />
So with the 'Delegated Account' now setup to allow the 'Delegatee' to access it, we need to add a shortcut to the 'Delegated Account'. <b style="color: red;">This part interacts with the 'Delegatee's' Lotus Notes Account.</b><br />
<br />
Navigate once more to the '<b>Preferences</b>' menu option in the Mail view:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyNxBKR7rQTZab4VAsMRm7CA_ZkoQEjUlDPd4o3pSKZWS_XjWGxRDhngrbpGNvYdyq0m3jYtCgPGFn9Bd4ZUhIytdaSWcgzm7FDP1H13P0XehpBdzN87qG8PaLMy-d6du8hjmOlRoC7Z4/s1600/1.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyNxBKR7rQTZab4VAsMRm7CA_ZkoQEjUlDPd4o3pSKZWS_XjWGxRDhngrbpGNvYdyq0m3jYtCgPGFn9Bd4ZUhIytdaSWcgzm7FDP1H13P0XehpBdzN87qG8PaLMy-d6du8hjmOlRoC7Z4/s640/1.PNG" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Click on 'Preferences' (Click to Enlarge)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>And again we want to go to the 'Acces & Delegation' tab, but this time click on the sub-tab titled '<b>Shortcuts to Others' Mail</b>'. From here we want to add the Delegated Person's Account, do this by click on the little button with a downwards facing arrow in the section titled "<b>Shortcuts in Your Mail File</b>":<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiv74Tsbxb4VLT1V-xL57FAyRZgCek8QCUe3enRKA3smMqUo43eniI_L0ZUyiDTKI2H1ZPA1ce63Io-DDEOIFHHtcyUytl1vlCWUGPVI8MXrfFU57dXhbztjoq6N7giJAjMrr84vOfu4I0/s1600/7.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="372" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiv74Tsbxb4VLT1V-xL57FAyRZgCek8QCUe3enRKA3smMqUo43eniI_L0ZUyiDTKI2H1ZPA1ce63Io-DDEOIFHHtcyUytl1vlCWUGPVI8MXrfFU57dXhbztjoq6N7giJAjMrr84vOfu4I0/s400/7.PNG" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Click the little arrow (Click to Enlarge)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>This will then present you with a familiar site, the Address Book. Find the Delegated person's account, and click '<b>OK</b>':<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Find the delegated account</td></tr>
</tbody></table>After clicking '<b>OK</b>' you should be back to the prior popup. Make sure the delegated persons name is populated in the field and click '<b>OK</b>' once more to apply the settings:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Lru7TZd3BJk/TX92y_yVFEI/AAAAAAAAACA/dF68vDst48c/s1600/RUN.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><br />
</a></div>Just a short one, but I thought I would pass on a a tip that a mentor shared with me, and some of the lessons I learnt from it.<br />
<br />
A few months ago I was just finishing up on my first client engagement for IBM, and over a coffee a mentor shared a great tip on how to cement the lessons learned from an account which I want to share: <b> </b><br />
<div style="font-family: inherit; text-align: center;"><u><span style="font-size: large;"><b>'Write Them Down'</b></span></u></div><br />
Now I know this sounds simple and even obvious, but go with it.<br />
Whenever you learn something whether it be a quick way to do something, or a lesson learnt from a mistake, <u>Write It Down</u>!<br />
<br />
Now. the idea behind it is that this time reflecting on what you learnt can help cement it in your mind. In addition it is handy to have a record of things you've learnt in your own writing style as just reading lessons other people have learnt can have disparity to your experiences, and you can miss points that are clear to other people as they experienced it.<br />
<br />
This doesn't have to be a daily activity (I do it around every 3-6 months), but is definitely something you should allow a little time for.<br />
<br />
Following this, you can then systematically review these tips/lessons at a later date and remember the experience associated with it.<br />
<br />
To illustrate this, here is one of mine that I'll share:<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<b></b><br />
<blockquote><b>Speed is Good, Accuracy is Better:</b><br />
I learnt quickly that you will always come across a boss/colleague who gives you a task to do, and asks for it to be done 'Yesterday'. I came across this on my first client engagement, and being fresh to the industry, I basically fired through tasks given to me in this manner at lightning speed, which of course lead to a few minor typos.<br />
<br />
Now this is a mistake that I let hamper me for pretty much most of my time there, and while I did my due diligence there would still be a few typos every now and then (which looking back now isn't a massive thing, it was just a stressful time on the account).<br />
<br />
But I learnt from this, that no matter how fast someone wants something, ALWAYS allow time for due dilligence on your work, and make sure things are accurate. A client/boss/colleague will always appreciate the right work, even if it takes 10 minutes longer than something quick and wrong.</blockquote><br />
Hopefully this has helped, and as always feel free to comment and share lessons you've learnt from your outings.Tommy Ghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01366125313143347435noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5664132713736575535.post-30473069352354061342011-03-11T07:49:00.000-08:002011-04-08T07:09:06.408-07:00How To Win That Java/J2EE InterviewHey All,<br />
<br />
So a colleague passed on a copy of this book to me as I'm currently ramping up my J2EE knowledge for work, and I thought it was worth sharing.<br />
It's called <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1411668243/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=aconslif-21&linkCode=as2&camp=1634&creative=6738&creativeASIN=1411668243" style="color: black;">Java/J2EE Job Interview Companion</a><img alt="" border="0" class=" ofvfqutuczaacvzbxaub ofvfqutuczaacvzbxaub eeluivxsatymidbbjtio eeluivxsatymidbbjtio eeluivxsatymidbbjtio eeluivxsatymidbbjtio" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.co.uk/e/ir?t=aconslif-21&l=as2&o=2&a=1411668243" style="border: medium none ! important; margin: 0px ! important;" width="1" /> By K.Arulkumaran & A.Sivayini<br />

<blockquote><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #444444;"><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;"></span></i></span><br />
<a name='more'></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #444444;"><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">"..assist all Java/J2EE practitioners to become better at what they do. Usually it takes years to understand all </span></i><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">the core concepts and key areas when you rely only on your work experience. The best way to fast track this is to read</span></i><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">appropriate technical information and proactively apply these in your work environment. It worked for me and hopefully it</span></i><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">will work for you as well. I was also at one stage undecided whether to name this book “Java/J2EE core concepts and</span></i><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">key areas” or “Java/J2EE Job Interview Companion”. The reason I chose “Java/J2EE Job Interview Companion” is</span></i><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">because the core concepts and key areas discussed in this book helped me to be successful in my interviews, helped me</span></i><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">to survive and succeed at my work regardless what my job (junior developer, senior developer, technical lead, designer,</span></i><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">contractor etc) was and also gave me thumbs up in code reviews. This book also has been set out as a handy reference</span></i><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">guide and a roadmap for building enterprise Java applications."</span></i></span></blockquote><br />
Although I'm not due an interview for a long while yet, it is also a handy guide for increasing your knowledge of the Java/J2EE language and structure. The authors has refined a vast area of knowledge into a succinct volume for people who don't have the time to read 10 different books on the subject, but instead want to pick up a 'Cliff Notes' of the important parts!Tommy Ghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01366125313143347435noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5664132713736575535.post-6275291529251278852011-03-07T08:35:00.000-08:002011-08-31T01:41:28.866-07:00How to Migrate Your Lotus Notes to Another PC/Laptop<h2>Ever Wondered How To Move Your Lotus Notes To Another Computer? Based on this I thought I would share what I learnt from the process and try and help any IBM'ers looking to migrate their Notes account to another PC/Laptop, or if (like me) they just want access to their e-mail from 2 machines. This guide should be transferable to other companies that use Lotus Notes/Domino Server as their e-mail offering, but any confirmation on this is appreciated!</span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><i></i></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">You should now be presented with a folder full of files and a few folders. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Copy this file to a pen-drive/e-mail it to yourself, and keep it safe. We will be using this on the target machine later on.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Step 2 - Finding out your Domino Server Address</span></b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
</span></b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><div style="text-align: left;"></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Now we have to find out which Domino Server you are assigned to, as IBM hosts multiple mail servers. For those interested in a little background, a Domino Server is basically an IBM server product used for Mail Server hosting (instead of say an Exchange Server for Outlook). It holds all of your user e-mail (as well as other things) and you will most likely be hosting a 'local' copy of your account on your laptop, which requires you to 'replicate' with your assigned Domino Server(s) to send and receive mail.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">To find out our Domino Server Address, we will have to boot up and log into Lotus Notes.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Once in, go to your Workspace, and click on the drop down arrow on your mail application:</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXB5G-FOp9vKeIf0Px3-LGF6VKrI-u8D0LGnEOcieK3YipVHHvZIlw-Xsq5UDa9bcn2UdO-IOLP2OgoJkKwwWc6mfgFGXiR6trgCMKM737fJz7NSQlNinVVBWCKtpWY2_kaiNYqhN8vts/s1600/Domino+Server.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXB5G-FOp9vKeIf0Px3-LGF6VKrI-u8D0LGnEOcieK3YipVHHvZIlw-Xsq5UDa9bcn2UdO-IOLP2OgoJkKwwWc6mfgFGXiR6trgCMKM737fJz7NSQlNinVVBWCKtpWY2_kaiNYqhN8vts/s1600/Domino+Server.PNG" /></a></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">You should now see a list like the above. There may be 2 servers, but the top server is the one we want (as I believe the second one acts as a backup should the first be down).</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Note down the full server name and path, i.e.<b> </b>for me it is: <b>D06 / / /IBM </b>(parts are blanked for privacy concerns).</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
</span></b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">This is used so the new Lotus Notes install on the target machine can find your account on the specified mail server.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Lastly, we need to find the IP address of this server, as Lotus Notes can get confused with hosts names depending on different variables.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">To do this, open up a new Command Prompt window by going to:</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><i>Start > Run </i>and type in <i>CMD</i> and hit enter.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">You will be presented with a black box command prompt. From here we're going to 'ping' our Domino Server to find out it's IP address, do this by typing in:</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><i><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Ping [Server Name]</span></b></i></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">So in my case I would write:</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />

</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">From this we know the IP address of the server. So in my case it is:<b> <i>10.0.0.0</i></b></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Your's will be different.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Note down all this information we have just got, as we will need it later!</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Step 3 - Installing Lotus Notes on your 'New' Machine</span></b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
</span></b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Right, so we have our .ID file, and we have both the server name/server path and the IP address of said server. Now we are ready to setup the fresh Notes install on your target machine.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Start by grabbing yourself a FRESH copy of Lotus Notes, for IBM'ers it's best to get it through ISSI. I used version 8.0 at the time of writing this, but theoretically the method should be sound for any recent version (feel free to prove me wrong here!). I reiterate that it must be a fresh install, as a previously botched install can leave trace files behind. If this is the case, simply delete/rename the Lotus Notes folder is named 'notes' and is typically found in the root of your 'C:\' drive, so C:\ > Notes.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The following steps assume you have used ISSI, but if you have got a copy from elsewhere, skip ahead a paragraph to the 'Wizard Install' part.</span></i></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">ISSI will begin downloading the necessary files for the install, and will bombard you with warning boxes, have a read if you fancy but it's mostly common disclaimer stuff with a few friendly tid-bits on the install process.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The install will get to 94% and then should prompt you about having to setup Lotus Notes for the install to finish. This is the important bit, and where we use all the information we have just gleaned. So do not close of the Lotus Notes wizard setup box which follows:</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Wizard Setup</span></b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
</span></b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">So, you should now be facing a Lotus Note's wizard welcome screen which looks like the following:</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"></div><div style="text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhep3Cu1jPAXbkgH3ZmxSTAaB6Vm5eLyH7J0wm4OMwRqL-VhsR9m8eYYDFXOFK2mbd_o5NLHGYdTp2S0sgvVOqHD0UMt9EvH6h-eKQ0ruMyaZVwXEJZued-U3nHWyMCbnkY2DyoeddM0F0/s1600/1.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhep3Cu1jPAXbkgH3ZmxSTAaB6Vm5eLyH7J0wm4OMwRqL-VhsR9m8eYYDFXOFK2mbd_o5NLHGYdTp2S0sgvVOqHD0UMt9EvH6h-eKQ0ruMyaZVwXEJZued-U3nHWyMCbnkY2DyoeddM0F0/s1600/1.PNG" /></a></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
